Henry Ford’s autobiography, My Life and Work, is an absolute joy to read. This classic leadership text shows how Henry Ford dominated production and sales of the Ford motor cars in the early 1900s. It describes his early start as a mechanic to his position as one of the richest men in America and as an influential “get things done” producer during the second World War.
This book has great value for its insight into the early history of car manufacturing and the progression of one person from a small business to owner of a massive corporation.
Its detailed description of Ford’s way of doing business has a truly insightful explanation of how Ford managed to pay his workers better than any other manufacturer, keep his costs low, his production stable, his turnover high and to keep his brand at the top of the list for so many years.
His attention to minute details is inspiring. He counted the minutes that workers took to walk from one area to another, and then designed his space to make it more time effective. He counted pennies to make sure even waste products were reused. He measured parts to make them as cheap to manufacture as possible without cutting costs that would lose their quality or effectiveness. He measured the time it took to fit parts to make up the finished product and streamlined the whole process.
Aside from the Ford Car he was a prominent figure in his later years in social issues and founded systems to help people improve their lives, without giving charity. He was a firm believer that work improves lives and that people benefit from being given a chance not handouts.
Any modern business owner will benefit from reading this book to see the measures he took to not waste an instance of time or a scrap of raw material.
